Ruby Around South County

We road trip out of the county often, love walking around SLO enjoying all things local, but this time, we decided to explore just outside our town's borders-to its neighbors to the South. Between shopping, eating and exploring the sights, we indulged in South County for a day. Many of these shop owners are great customers of ours and we wanted to experience their spaces for a change. Do yourself a favor soon, and follow our lead-treasures await less than a half hour away!

First stop: Esteem Surf on Pismo Beach. Owner Robbie Dominques shares our love of the past utilizing reclaimed wood, vintage crates, suitcases, etc from our store and elsewhere to enhance his displays. Not to mention he fills his floor with quality brands like Poler, Roark, Oakley (remember these?!). A space that makes you want to dress well, feel inspired, and get out in the water all in one. Oh, and they deliver a case of fresh donuts to the register every morning.

Post shopping, we walked a few blocks up to visit the newly re-opened Chop Street Cafe. Chef Chris Waller is serving up some amazing locally grown, farm-to-table faire (we tasted the mini Shepard's pot pie and fish tacos- yum!), while his wife decorates the space with old bottles, bottles, and succulent arrangements. We have been anticipating their opening with each purchase of olds she found at RR, and we were not disappointed by this talented couple!

With full bellies we jumped cities, heading into Arroyo Grande's Village. A friend and fellow junker, Ely has hoards of treasures to explore within his shop, Village Vintage. His collection of turquoise will make anyone into a lover of the Southwest, and as he unearths the history behind the pieces, your love deepens. This shop is always worth a chat and a gander!

On our way back home, we veered out towards Lopez Lake to admire the wildflowers growing inches from the asphalt. Purple and yellow spotted hillsides- is there anything more lovely than Springtime?

What South County nooks and spaces have you discovered? We need an excuse to get back out there!

It's been a very full week with us at the rose...

(1) The week started out with one of my besties helping me out at the shop. After work we felt like we deserved a treat, so we did! Scout Coffee is San Luis's newest coffee house and we especially like their lil milkshakes. A perfect size for a refreshment.

(2) Road trip south...our most awesome crew covered us for the day so that we could extend our trip! First stop is one of our favorite boutiques, Plenty, in Santa Ynez. We follow them on insta (@plentyboutique) and the dresses they have been posting lately made us high tail it down...and we didn't come back empty handed!

(3) Second stop was another favorite shop, Wet Sand. It is in Ventura and is a curated surf lifestyle shop - we love their clothing, jewelry, and other casual living necessities.

(4) After a good nights' sleep in a friends' trailer - home away from home when in L.A. - we shopped the Rose Bowl for boots, clothes, purses, and jewels. We try not to let all of the other amazing merchandise keep us from focusing on the task at hand, but it is very hard.

(5) Back to San Luis to rest up so that we could hit the road for a very important appointment with one of our favorite suppliers! The mister and I hit the road again (very early) to pick from a container that was loaded in Texas. We love our new items and they should hit the store next month....stay tuned!

(6) All this work, we needed a bit of play! Yep, Bingo was it's name-o. A handful of us got our game on and had a lot of laughs. Next time we hope to win!!

Yep, that was just one week. Oh boy. How has your week been? Do anything exciting?

P.S. In case ya missed it:

Ruby Around Town

Welcome to the first installment of Ruby Around Town where we document exceptionally wonderful weeks! Here are some fun things that we did:

  • Pop tarts at Sally Loo's - there is always a new and delicious flavor every Wednesday. They fly off the shelf fast, so get there bright and early.
  • It was a good mail day: the Anthology Magazine & the Free People Catalog arrived, talk about a snail mail score!
  • Still pinching ourselves that we get to hang with Mary Emmerling and Ann Lawrence at High Noon, Mary has written 20+ books and edited at House Beautiful magazine, Country home to name a few...Ann is a designer in Santa Fe, New Mexico and has worked with some amazing people. The dinner conversation was epic!! Did you read about our trip to Arizona?
  • Romp Shoes did a photoshoot at the shop with some props - we love helping out local businesses whatever way we can!

How was your week? We hope it was a good one!
